Diabetic Shoes - An Important Part Of Living With
Diabetes
If you are a diabetic and you are not
wearing diabetic shoes, we have to ask why.
Perhaps you don't understand how important this simple footwear
can be in heading off complications normally associated with
diabetes. Perhaps you don't understand how readily available
these shoes are. True at one time they were hard to come by for
those that needed them, but not anymore. Or perhaps you simply
don't understand the benefits diabetic shoes provide.
So let's talk about those benefits. It's no
secret that diabetics have an increased risk of developing foot
problems. These problems can range from mild to major problems,
especially if an ulcer or infection should pop up. These
infections, if not treated quickly and properly, can and often
do lead to amputation.
So how do diabetic shoes help? Quite simply
they lessen the possibility of an infected or ulcerated
foot.
If a diabetic shoe is designed right, you'll
have both safety and comfort without having to give up the
mobility needed to complete the things we all must inevitably
do on a day to day basis. The difference between these shoes
and "normal" shoes should be minimal when it comes to the
things we normally do. But understand that when it comes to
sports or other activities that put stress on the feet, even a
good pair of diabetic shoes will not give you a lot of
protection. For the diabetic, putting a large amount of stress
on the feet should be avoided, which means some sporting
activities might need to be avoided as well.
It is imperative that you consult your
doctor to find out what type of diabetic shoes is best designed
for you. You cannot drive over to your local shoe outlet and
pick up a pair. These shoes can be obtained only by
perscription, and your doctor will surely want to make sure you
have the proper pair for your feet.
And be sure not to make the mistake of wearing them only on
occasion. Diabetic shoes serve an important purpose, to keep
you from having foot related problems. For them to be effective
they absolutely must be on whenever any weight is on your feet.
Not just some time, but all the time. Your certainly don't want
infections or ulcerations, so why not take the necessary steps
to prevent them?
