Diabetic Retinopathy Explained
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the more
disturbing ancillary complications of diabetes. We'll discuss
why in a minute, but understand that it is vital that you take
proper steps to make sure that this complication does not
expand prior to being detected.
Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes
that affects the vision. The blood vessels in the retina are
damaged, and when the retina is no longer working properly,
your sight will suffer. Blindness can result from diabetic
retinopathy so this is a very serious condition.
But what makes it so disturbing is that unlike most
conditions, diabetic retinopathy sneaks up on you. There are no
warning signs and no early symptoms before the condition
becomes serious. It simply creeps up on you before you even
know the condition is present. In some instances, it is there
for a long time before you even realize it.
So what are your options? Well there is only one really. If
you have diabetes you absolutely must have regular eye exams.
This cannot be compromised. Failure to do this could very well
result in diabetic retinopathy appearing seemingly out of
nowhere in an already advanced stage. The good news is that
this is easy to avoid, but do not make the mistake of failing
to have a regular eye exam.
Here's why. Yes diabetic retinopathy can be treated, but
only if it is caught in time. Laser surgery can work wonders
and is a very effective treatment. But we cannot stress enough
that it must be caught early. That's why you cannot shirk your
responsibility to have your eyes checked regularly. Do this,
and you've already made the treatment possible.
It's simply a matter of proper prevention and treatment to
effectively deal with this diabetes complication.
